AB, Saini combine to win Super Over for RCB

AB de Villiers and Navdeep Saini have combined together to get the important two points for RCB. The tournament saw the second super over as Mumbai Indians first lit up the ground with a brilliant comeback courtesy Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard clean-striking to secure a tie first but then failed to score enough runs in the super over which was just too easy for the likes of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli.

The match 10 of the IPL 2020 saw the defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore. Both the teams are at two points with one win and one loss in their performance so far in the competition.

Royal Challengers Bangalore innings – AB de Villiers leading the batting contingent

Devdutt Padikkal and Aaron Finch opened the innings for RCB. Padikkal who had an impressive outing on his RCB debut, once again was impressive. But it was Finch who was the early aggressor in the innings. The pair brought up fifty partnership for the second time in three outings.

1st wicket partnership produced 81 runs in 9 overs. That brought Virat Kohli on strike for his weird innings of 3 runs off 11 balls.

The innings were started on the back of Finch and Padikkal half-centuries but their efforts were overshadowed by AB de Villiers. The South African made 55 runs off 24 balls that included four boundaries and four maximums.

Shivam Dube, in the end, added the final touch with his quick-fire 27 off 10 balls that had three sixes in it.

Mumbai bowlers went for plenty. Trent Boult was the most successful bowler picking up two wickets for 34 runs. Jasprit Bumrah is having a quiet IPL so far. He, too was very expensive. His four-over spell leaked 42 runs for no wickets.

Mumbai Indians innings – Ishan Kishan 99 and Kieron Pollard 60

Mumbai innings were derailed from the start of the innings. Rohit Sharma was the first to go in the second over. The innings were 39-3 and 78-4 in 11.2 overs when they needed 123 runs off 52 balls and when Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard came together on the crease.

The Kishan-Pollard pair simply got MI to the line as they scored 119 runs off 51 balls that include a brilliant 99 by Kishan and 60 off 24 balls by Pollard. They put on an incredible fightback in the last phase of the innings.

MI needed 90 runs off the last five overs. Number of sixes; Kishan hit 9 while Pollard hit 5. The pair had nearly got their team to the victory but Kishan was out on the penultimate ball leaving five runs to win on the final ball. Pollard only managed to hit a one-bounce boundary to take the match into the super over.

Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan hit Chahal and Zampa for 49 runs in two overs.

The 17th over was hit for 27 runs by Pollard. Adam Zampa was the bowler and was treated inhumanly by the West Indian. Started with a boundary, the next ball Pawan Negi dropped the catch for six and Pollard went for another two in the over.

The 18th over, again was hit for 22 runs. This time, it was Yuzvendra Chahal, who was man of the match in the RCB’s winning match. Hit for three sixes, the score now reflected 31 runs required off the final two overs.

Navdeep Saini was saved for the penultimate over and he only conceded 12 runs in the over leaving 19 runs required in the final over.

Isuru Udana was bowling the last over. Two sixes on the 3rd and 4th ball left five runs off the last two balls. But, the next ball Kishan got out but they ran so Pollard will face the last ball and he managed to hit the boundary of the last ball. Hellooo. The second tied-match of the event. We are going for a super over.

Washington Sundar was the most economical bowler picking up one wicket for just 12 runs in his quota of four overs.

Super Over

Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard came out to bat in the super over. Navdeep Saini was the bowler. Though he didn’t pick up a wicket in the night but bowled a superb super over conceding only seven runs.

It’s de Villiers and Kohli for RCB to chase 8 runs to win the super over. Jasprit Bumrah, who had bowled MI to two super over wins previously had the ball. A fine edge over the keeper on the 4th ball with fine leg inside the circle made things easy for RCB as they need two off two balls. An off-stump Yorker yielded single. Virat Kohli facing the last ball and he hit it for boundary to seal the win for RCB.

AB de Villiers for his pure striking and entertaining innings was given the man of the match award.
