Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Match Prediction, BBL 2020
T20 Prediction for Third-placed Adelaide Strikers take on the winners of the Eliminator play-off, fifth-placed Sydney Thunder, with a place in the Challenger play-off – effectively the semi-final – up for grabs to the winner. The match, at the Adelaide Oval, takes place on February 1 and starts at 19:40 local time.
Defeat in their final league game, against Hobart Hurricanes, cost Adelaide a place in the Qualifier play-off – which would have earned two shots at reaching the BBL final – but they were the better team of these two overall in the group stage.
That said, Sydney Thunder won when they last met and also beat the same Hurricanes team that had denied Adelaide second place. Alex Hales has been their key man, hitting top form with perfect timing.
Adelaide Strikers lost the toss and were asked to field first last time. They will likely want to bat first at the Adelaide Oval this time out.
The weather forecast is bleak throughout much of the day in Adelaide, but the rain should clear and make way for a cloudy evening by the time this game starts.
Given there were 424 runs scored in the 40 overs last time out at the Adelaide Oval, it is clear the hard, fast wicket will reward attacking batting.
Strikers faced a defeat in their last match here at home after 4 consecutive wins in the league. Finishing at number 3 in the points table, ADS made it to the Knockout stage of the game with 8 wins in 14 matches in the league stage of BBL 2019-20.
In their last match at this venue, Strikers lost by 10 runs chasing 218 against Hobart Hurricanes. Phillip Salt has scored 2 back to back fifties in the last two innings. In addition, Travis Head has also looked in good touch. Alex Carey and Jonathan Wells will be crucial lower down the order for Adelaide while Jake Weatherald will be expected to deliver at the top alongside Phillip Salt.
In the bowling department, Wes Agar, Rashid Khan, Peter Siddle, and Michale Nesser will be the players to watch out for. While the bowlers expensive in the last match including Billy Stanlake, they’ve done exceptionally well in the previous games while defending total below 180.
Sydney Thunder defeated Hobart Hurricanes in a big way in the Eliminator to qualify for the Knockout match. While Alex Hales continued his form, Usman Khawaja also joined the party scoring a fifty at the top as SYT finished with 197-5 batting first.
In the middle-order, Callum Ferguson and Alex Ross have a big role to play. Skipper Ferguson had chipped in some crucial runs in the last match and will need to continue doing so. All-rounder Chris Morris will come in handy at number 5 for Thunder if the top-order lays a strong foundation at the start.
The good news for Sydney Thunder is their bowling form with Chris Morris, Daniel Sams, and Jonathan Cook all in good form. While Morris and Sams have been among the top contributors with the ball throughout the season, Jonathan Cook and Chris Tremain have also been in good form lately.
Our Prediction for ADS vs SYT

Adelaide Strikers have a balanced batting line-up with their top 5 batsmen being in good form while Rashid Khan at number 6 has also delivered great performances in the league stage. While the home team will be confident in their batsmen playing at the home venue, Sydney Thunder has a strong, in-form bowling attack. Chris Morris will be the bowler to watch out for in the SYT camp.
This promises to be an exciting game with both teams capable of bouncing back from any point during the course of the match. Though ADS has the home advantage and a strong batting line-up, Sydney Thunder can’t be written off due to their in-form bowling attack.
