Amit Mishra’s Potential Injury Replacement

Following a finger injury, Delhi Capitals leg spinner, Amit Mishra, has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2020.

Mishra is the third-highest wicket-taker for the capitals, coming in and taking crucial top-order wickets.

While the Capital has a lot of spin options with Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, and Sandeep Lamichanne, the experience of Amit Mishra will be felt. His absence may hurt the Capitals due to the impact of wrist-spinners this season.

The Capitals may name a replacement for Amit Mishra soon. Being an Indian player, they may have to look at Indian options as a replacement.

Here are few Indians who can replace Amit Mishra:

  1. KC Cariappa

A similar replacement, KC Cariappa, the Karnataka leg-spinner, may be suitable for Amit Mishra. Cariappa was initially bought by the Knight Riders in 2015 and then played for the Kings XI Punjab.

Not getting much chance, KC Cariappa went unsold in the IPL 2020 auction. Being a leg-spinner, he may be a suitable replacement in a tournament where leg-spinners have been doing a good job.

KC Cariappa is also a specialist in T20 cricket, being a regular player in the Karnataka Premier League. A chance in the IPL may help him grow as a player, as he’d be playing with the likes of Ashwin and Axar Patel on his side.

2. Rishi Dhawan

All-rounder Rishi Dhawan, a handy batsman down the order and medium-pace bowler, may be a viable replacement. Bringing in Rishi Dhawan can provide Delhi with options in both departments.

Playing an allrounder will allow an extra batsman in the side. Along with the team composition, he can also help add strength to the Capitals pace attack.

3. Yusuf Pathan

A hard-hitting batsman and off-spinner, Yusuf Pathan, is well suited for the short form of cricket. He’s been around for quite some time and has lots of experience for India and the IPL.

Though he may be inconsistent at times, his presence can give the batting side confidence towards the innings’ end. He is also a handy off-spin bowler who can get through his overs at a good pace.

He may be a suitable replacement for Amit Mishra, as he provides the Capitals with a spin option and an explosive middle-order batsman. He may also allow the Capitals to play Sandeep Lamichanne in place of an overseas batsman. By doing so, they would have a quality spinner and a powerful batsman.

4. Hanuma Vihari

Andhra Pradesh batsman Hanuma Vihari maybe an unorthodox replacement for Amit Mishra, who is out injured, while the option of Vihari may seem different, the quality and options he provides may be worth considering.

Steady and talented batsmen and handy off-spinner, Vihari could add flexibility to both departments while strengthening the bowling. He’s been a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals in the past, while also playing test cricket for India.

As a test cricketer, Vihari played in various roles in his short career so far. He started in the middle order, opened the batting, and played as the lone spinner in the side. The variety of roles he has played shows the kind of flexibility he provides.

5. Ish Sodhi

If an overseas replacement is allowed, Ish Sodhi could be an excellent option for Amit Mishra. The aggressive leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, coming from New Zealand, is one of the top bowlers in T20 cricket.

The strong spin attack will be more potent and intimidating. Ish Sodhi would also provide another overseas option with the presence of Sandeep Lamicchane already present.

The Capitals fielded Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Both spinners were successful and negated the absence of Amit Mishra.
Likely, the Capitals may not name a replacement. The presence of Sandeep Lamichanne and Ashwin and Axar Patel may remove the need for a substitute.
