In the past, Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore struggled and faced numerous issues with their bowling.
With players like Virat Kohli, Ab De Villiers, and at one point, Chris Gayle, the Royal Challengers were and are still the best batting side of the IPL.
While the batting side remains strong on paper, this season, the bowling has picked up exceptionally.
A strong bowling side is crucial to winning tournaments.
The Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals this season have done well to fix their bowling holes.
In the past seasons, the bowling strength was the key factor behind franchisees’ success like Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
2016 final was announced as a game between the best batting side of the league against the best bowling side.
While RCB that year had Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers both in excellent form, and decent batting support, the Sunrisers were heavily dependent on David Warner and their bowling to win games.
In the end, it was the best bowling side that trumped, as had been the case in many other seasons.
Sides that won the IPL, such as the Super Kings, Knight Riders, and Sunrisers, have always been blessed with one or two bowlers who can be banked upon while the others play right supporting roles.
Up until now, the bowling code in big tournaments has been best cracked by the Mumbai Indians.
Each year they invest a fair amount on bowlers and have always had a near-perfect bowling attack, which allows them to defend low scores with ease.
This season the Royal Challengers Bangalore look like they have achieved a complete bowling attack.
On paper, they have an excellent variety with their bowlers.
In Navdeep Saini, they have a bowler who can bowl with express pace.
There’s Chris Morris, who can bowl anywhere in the innings and also provides support to the batting with his hitting abilities.
Washington Sundar has been with the Royal Challengers Bangalore for a couple of seasons and has finally begun to peak.
In his successful debut season with the Rising Pune Supergiant, Washington Sundar was used in the powerplay and is very impactful in the game’s earlier stages.
After a couple of seasons, Bangalore has finally started handing Washington Sundar the new ball. With the new ball, Washington Sundar has been very economical, applying pressure to the opposition batsmen.
Yuzvendra Chahal is the aggressive and wicket-taking leg-spinner in the side. With a bowler like Chahal, who likes to toss the ball in the air, wickets are a high possibility after a tight spell from Washington Sundar.
Chahal is also a brilliant bowler who knows how to use his skills and limitations very efficiently.
Isuru Udana has also been a regular member of the Bangalore side this season. While he may be under the spotlight in the bowling attack, Udana is still doing an outstanding job silently supporting his side.
He is also doing a great job during the back end of the innings.
Along with the five bowlers mentioned, Dale Steyn, Umesh Yadav, and Moeen Ali in the bench provide options and experience as they have a fast bowler and off-spinner in the cupboard.
Along with those two, left-arm spinner, Pawan Negi Is also on the bench and can further add to the options and variety.
Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa is also on the bench. Being an aggressive leg-spinner, Zampa and Chahal may be a deadly combo on slow pitches that sides may encounter later In the season.
Among all the bowlers, Mohammad Siraj proved against the Knight Riders that he can watch out for with his talent.
He blew the Knight Riders away with his spell. He became the first bowler to bowl two maidens in an IPL match.
While he has been fired at for his economy rate many times, Siraj proved that he belongs on the cricket field last night.
It will be tough to call the bowling attack weak or to lack with such variety in bowlers.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore have done well to match the bowling of other table toppers, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, who also have strong bowling attacks.
With three teams having such variety in their bowling, the best bowling side may likely be the one to win the IPL again.
The wait now is to see which bowling side is the best and how balanced they are with their batsmen.
