Chandimal, Udana star in thrilling super over win

Dinesh Chandimal and Isuru Udana have done the impossible to bring their team home in a thrilling encounter in the first match of the Lanka Premier League. The match went to the distance and was decided in the super over. Kandy Tuskers batting first put up a mammoth total of 219 that was leveled in some fashion by Colombo Kings in the final over. Kings then held their nerves to win the one-over eliminator.

In the 1st match of LPL 2020, Colombo Kings and Kandy Tuskers were upfront in the newest T20 league. Winning the toss and fielding first, Kings were set a daunting total of 2019 courtesy some flamboyant batting from the captain Kusal Perera. In reply, Colombo Kings on the back of Dinesh Chandimal steered the chase with Isuru Udana powering the team to super over and then bowling the team to victory in the super over.

Kandy Tuskers innings – Gurbaz, Perera carnage

Winning the toss and sending Kandy Tuskers to bat first. The openers were captain Kusal Perera and Afghan 18-year old prodigy, Rahmanullah Gurbaz. And it was to treat to watch.  Helloooo. LPL has started with a bang.

Angelo Mathews started the bowling proceedings for Colombo Kings. With series of boundaries and sixes, the match started in an electrifying manner. The score reached 50 at the end of the 4th over.

With still plenty of sixes hit, Gurbaz was the first to go at the score of 75 runs in the 6th over. He scored a lightning 53 runs in double quick time of 22 balls. His innings included six 4s and four 6s.

Joined by Kusal Mendis, the innings proceeded. Another stand of 50+ runs meant that we are all set for a high-scoring game. With a couple of 30s from Mendis and Asela Gunaratne, the scored reached 219.

Captain finished his innings on 87 runs from 52 balls that included nine 4s and four 6s. He was out in the final over. Colombo Kings were given the steep target of 220 runs in the first match of LPL.

All bowlers were expensive. Manpreet Gony, Dushmantha Chameera, and Qais Ahmad picked up one wicket each.

Colombo Kings innings – Chandimal, Udana save the day for Kings

Chasing 220 is never too easy. Starting the innings, it was Dinesh Chandimal and Laurie Evans who opened the innings. Started the innings in a brisk way, the pair bring up the 50 stand in the 4th over. Going nicely, the Kings lost their first wicket in the 6th over. Evans was out on 22 runs off 14 balls.

Chandimal the main man at the crease. Keeping the required run rate in mind, he scored 80 runs off 46 balls. An innings that included 12 fours and 2 sixes. But, after a 67-run second-wicket stand, Chandimal was out. That bring Andre Russell on the crease but some good bowling from the Kandy Tuskers bowlers keep the Kings batsmen at bay.

Losing wickets continuously, the Kings were 168-6 at the end of the 17th over even losing their main striker Russell in the 17th over. Kings needing 52 runs to win from the final three overs.

Dinesh Chandimal laid the foundation with 80 runs off 46 balls

Two new batsmen at the crease. Qais Ahmad and Isuru Udana. The next over, Udana was dropped and immediately he repaid by hitting two sixes. 35 runs needed in the last two overs.

The over started with a no ball and guess what it’s a boundary and a free hit coming up. Making the most of the over, Ahmad and Udana collected 15 runs from the over leaving 20 runs to score in the final over.

15 runs were scored in the first three deliveries included two sixes from Udana. The bowler, Asela Gunaratne. A twist in the tale, Udana was out the next ball, leaving five runs from the last two balls but they only managed to get two twos leaving the score 219.

And we are heading into the super over in the first game of the LPL. Wowwww.

Nuwan Pradeep and Naveen ul Haq picked up two wickets each.

Super Over

Colombo Kings batting first sent Isuru Udana and Andre Russell. Nuwan Pradeep is the bowler. Udana was out on the second ball but Russell and Angelo Mathews hit a four and a six to take the super over score to 16.

Chasing 17 in the one-over eliminator, Kandy Tuskers had Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Kusal Perera as their batsmen. Isuru Udana has the ball for the Kings. Gurbaz hitting 2nd and 3rd ball for 4 and 6, Tuskers were in the driving seat needing just 7 runs from three balls. But, they only managed to score two runs on the three balls. Colombo Kings won the first match of LPL against Kandy Tuskers.

Dinesh Chandimal, for his 80 runs off 46 balls was the man of the match.
