DARWIN T20 LEAGUE 2020 | CRICKET EXTRAVAGANZA AMIDST PANDEMIC
Australia’s northern territory will witness the return of cricket amidst the global pandemic. The last reported COVID-19 case was on May 21, in the Northern Territory. Thus the capital, Darwin, is ready for the host much-awaited cricket action from June 6 to June 8.
Darwin T20 League 2020 will feature seven Darwin League Grade Clubs and one team will be an “Invitational XI”. The competition will be played in the round-robin method. With 15 games taking place with one semifinal and one final to be streamed to the global audience.
This comes as a pleasant surprise to the global cricket community. Also, reportedly up to 500 audiences will be allowed to see the matches live from the stadium. All matches will be taking place on three grounds, each day from 10 A.M and 2:30 P.M. Cazaly’s Oval, Marrara Cricket Ground, and Gardens are the aforementioned grounds. The T20 league will be followed by 50-over matches.
The tournament presents itself as a testing ground amid COVID-19. Australia has seemed to handle this pandemic better than other countries. Thus allowing the commencement of this popular sport. Few concerns were there regarding the use of saliva and sweat in between the games. Whether the white Kookaburra will be allowed to be shined by sweat and saliva are yet to be confirmed. Lachlan Baird, the chairman of Darwin Cricket Management, expressed that a firm response from the Australian board was awaited by him, in this regard.
The board is also waiting for the response of ICC in this matter. Later, Darwin is scheduled to host a three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, which was announced earlier.
In 2018, the league witnessed the return of David Warner and Cameron Bancroft after their ball-tampering incidents. Around this time the scenario has changed. The spectators are eagerly waiting for their stars to shine again.
