Shubman Gill, the player of the tournament of India’s successful campaign of the U19 World Cup in 2018 in New Zealand, and bowlers helped deliver big win for KKR. The team gained the second spot after a three-match saga of all the teams.
Kolkata Knight Riders came into the match with a strong performance against SRH and Rajasthan Royals were on the back of twin wins courtesy Sanju Samson couple of man of the match performances. In the match 12 of IPL 2020, KKR had beaten RR by 37 runs with a strong and dominating performance by their bowlers defending 174 runs.
After 12 matches, each team had played three matches. Four teams are at 4 points with two wins and one loss while the other four teams are at 2 points with one win and two losses. DC is leading the table followed by KKR and RR while three-time IPL winning team, CSK is at the bottom of the table.
Kolkata Knight Riders innings – Shubman Gill performance
For the second time in as many innings Shubman Gill had performed at the opening position. Providing a solid start to the team despite losing the early wicket Sunil Narine. Gill was on the back of man of the match performance against SRH in which he scored match-winning 70 runs off 62 balls.
Jofra Archer had a brilliant spell in the innings. With his fiery quick-spell, he was able to remove Gill and captain Dinesh Karthik, and at that stage, the team wasn’t looking at the finished score of 174 and it looked beyond reach.
After dismissing the pair, the score was 106-4 in 13.1 overs. Archer went hard to Andre Russell and his national team captain, Eoin Morgan who defied the spell.
Russell also got out after hitting three sixes at the score of 115 in 14.2 overs.
Morgan eventually provided the knock-out punch in the end with a little help from Pat Cummins and Kamlesh Nagarkoti to take the score to 174.
Archer was the pick of the bowlers took two wickets for just 18 runs in his four overs.
Rajasthan Royals innings – KKR bowlers’ make two in two
With a heavy studded batting line-up, RR was the confident side of the two scoring scores of above 200 in their previous two matches. But there was luck this time. Jos Buttler and Steve Smith opening the innings but Pat Cummins got the first break-through nicking Smith to keeper.
After that things were horror for the batting team. Royals were 42 for 5 in the 8th over of the innings minimizing all the aspects of winning the match and producing a miracle.
In pursuit of 175, the team further sank and could not stable. Changing the bowling options wisely, Karthik had a wonderful night as the captain. His bowlers performed accordingly picking up consistent wickets leaving nothing for RR.
Royals lost Jofra Archer, their 8th wicket for 88 runs, and lost the 9th wicket at 106 in 18th over. The only silver-lining for RR was the fifty of Tom Curran who hit 54 runs off 36 balls including two 4s and three 6s.
Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, and Varun Chakravarthy picked up two wickets each. Suni Narine, Pat Cummins, and Kuldeep Yadav picked up one wicket each. Narine was the only bowler who went 10-an-over while other bowlers’ economy was below 7.
Shivam Mavi, for his economical bowling and two wickets, was the man of the match.
