The Kings XI Punjab suffered a 69-run defeat, leaving them in a deeper hole this season. Last in the points table, the Kings XI Punjab have got a lot to look at if they want to make the playoffs. Below, we will see a few points regarding, the side its positves and issues that they have to solve as the tournament goes on.
Changes to the side against Sunrisers
The Kings XI Punjab made three changes to the side against the Sunrisers. They bought Simran Singh, Arshdeep Singh and Mujeeb Ur Rahman for Sarfraz Khan, Chris Jordan and Harpreet Brar.
The entry of Simran Singh possibly to reduce the burden on Nicholas Pooran and KL Rahul, who share the keeping gloves.
The move to bring in Arshdeep Singh turned out to be a crucial one. He came in for left-arm spinner, Harpreet Brar, and impressed immediately, picking up two wickets in the death. His two wickets were crucial in restricting the run flow.
Chris Jordan was bought back into the side against the Super Kings, in order to strengthen the death bowling. The move didn’t work out in the previous game, with Chris Jordan’s spell being expensive. He was replaced by Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman, who is also successful in the death overs. The change was not very effective, however, with Rahman going wicketless and giving away 39 runs in his quota.
They went into the match with just six batsmen and a long tail. While playing top quality bowlers helped them fight back towards the end of the first innings, the batsmen had too much to do with a short batting lineup.
Number of Wicket-keepers tried
The Kings XI played their third wicket-keeper against Kings XI Punjab. Before the IPL, it was assumed that KL Rahul would take the gloves as he is a potential candidate for the wicket-keeping spot across formats. Keeping his role in the national side, he shared the gloves with Nicholas Pooran.
Despite the presence of two keepers, Punjab played Prabhsimran Singh, who is also a specialist keeper. The move was possibly made, to provide the side with a young batting option, while also reducing the burden on Rahul and Pooran as keepers.
While he hit a few crisp shots, he was unfortunate to get dismissed in his short but promising innings.
Batting approach and form
With both openers on the top of the run scoring charts in IPL 2020, the top-order has been heavily depended on to do the run scoring. This is partly to do with the form of Glenn Maxwell, who hasn’t been at his best yet. Barring Nicholas Pooran, there hasn’t been much support from the middle order.
With a misfiring middle order, the openers have been made to change their approach. KL Rahul who usually plays aggressively at the start is now looking to steer the innings. His approach allows him to hold the innings together well. He however, tends to go at a slower pace leaving too much for the finishers and at times delays their entry for too late in the innings.
Against the Sunrisers, they started with a similar approach of Rahul looking to bat through after early wickets. He was dismissed for 11 while Nicholas Pooran was going very well. Despite the innings from Nicholas Pooran, the Kings XI couldn’t get close to the target as the other batsmen could not hold their ends.
Bowling issues and positives against Sunrisers
It took the Kings XI Punjab around 30 overs to pick up a wicket. Their bowling was always under the scanner despite the presence of bowlers like Shami and Cottrell. While the two have been successful with the new ball, the side struggled in the end overs.
They bought in Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman, to try and finish things better. He was unable to get a wicket and went at nearly ten an over, in a game where all the bowlers were struggling for Punjab.
Just when it seemed like Punjab had a huge task on hand, youngster Ravi Bishnoi pulled things back, removing both openers in the same over. He created an opening from which another youngster, Arshdeep Singh, did well to build on. With his accuracy he was able to control the run flow and also dismissed Garg and Williamson
Success of youngsters
With the bowlers facing issues to win games for their side, the Kings XI Punjab have found a couple of wicket-takers in yesterdays match. Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh led a brilliant fight back, with Bishnoi removing both openers in the same over. With their wickets, and Arshdeep’s accurate bowling, Punjab were able to fight back and restrict the Sunrisers to much less than they could have got.
Ravi Bishnoi in particular has been a find for them, picking up wickets regularly with his aggressive bowling.
