IPL 2020: Kolkata Knight Riders, not at their Best but Competed well and Deserved More

Kolkata Knight Riders had their share of setbacks but still fought well this season.

Where did they finish:

The Kolkata Knight Riders finished fifth on the points table with 14 points.

They were in contention for the playoffs for most of the season but missed out due to poor net-run-rate.

Varun Chakravarthy has done well this season with a breakthrough performance.

He took 17 wickets and maintained a good economy rate with his mystery spin.

His bowling was good enough to keep Kuldeep Yadav out of the side and has also allowed Varun to make it to the Indian Team.

Eoin Morgan has been another positive in the league as he did well in the middle-order.

He made 418 runs and helped finish the innings well with some crucial runs.

He was given captaincy mid-way through the series allowing an insight on how the Kolkata Knight Riders may approach the game next season.

Sunil Narine as an opener didn’t work as well while he also missed a few games due to his action.

Losing Narine at a crucial stage of the season didn’t help as the side had to change its team composition.

Andre Russel form and fitness didn’t help the Kolkata Knight Riders as well.

He struggled to get going with the bat and couldn’t bowl after suffering an injury which restricted him as a player

Dinesh Karthik floated around the line-up this season but couldn’t get going in any position.

Though he has a half century, his batting has not been up to the mark as he bagged three ducks this season.

Clarity in roles is another thing that may have been a concern with the Knight Riders.

They started with Narine as an opener and changed his spot as he was struggling.

They kept moving Dinesh Karthik around in the batting line-up which may not have helped him play at his best.

Rahul Tripathi, who is best as an opener, started the season in the lower order, moved to the top order and then back to the lower order.

He wasn’t given a consistent run a particular spot despite a good performance at the top.

Changing captaincy mid-way is also something that may not have helped the Kolkata Knight Riders.

While Morgan is a fabulous captain, it may not have been the best decision as he would not get as much time to know his team as he could have in the beginning of the tournament.

Star Performers:

Kolkata Knight Riders
Varun Chakravarthy has been among the best in IPL 2020

Varun Chakravarthy is by far the best player for the Kolkata Knight Riders this season.

With Sunil Narine missing few games and Kuldeep Yadav out of form, Chakravarthy stepped nicely, picking up 17 wickets in the tournament

His performance has allowed him to get a spot on the Australian tour and this IPL has definitely had an impact on the mystery spinners career.

Things to look at for the future:

The Kolkata Knight Riders must ensure their players know what their roles are.

They tried five openers with only Shubman Gill getting a decent run at the top.

Morgan, who has been in good form, may have also been underused a bit as he could have made a bigger impact had he walked in before Dinesh Karthik.

The Indian pace attack looks very promising but their needs to be a little more consistency, while the overseas pacers also need to step up a bit.

Pat Cummins bowled really well towards the end of the tournament but struggled for wickets early on which is something that can be looked at.

Lockie Ferguson started well but faded away after few impressive games.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have a pretty balanced line-up but are heavy with overseas players.

With only four overseas players allowed in a game, they may look for some Indian talents in the upcoming auctions to add some more variety in the squad.
