Indian Premier League, with all the speculations about the IPL this year, the event eventually started today with Chennai Super Kings emerged as the winners as they beat the defending champions Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets. MI vs CSK opener can’t get better start as we got today.
Strong performances from CSK’s batsmen and bowlers, first restricted MI to a score of 162 and in the end, lead the team to the victory quite comfortably after getting into trouble initially in the innings.
CSK traveled to Abu Dhabi for the IPL opener and then sending MI to bat first after winning the toss. Deepak Chahar, who was tested positive early when the teams arrived in UAE but recovered in time for the first match, started the proceedings of IPL 2020 with Rohit Sharma, along with Quinton de Kock as his partner, faced the first ball and smashing the ball between cover and point for the first boundary.
A reasonable start to the proceedings, de Kock scored quickly with plenty of boundaries. Piyush Chawla and Sam Curran, the new recruits in the team, made the early breakthroughs picking up wickets in 4th and 5th overs. Chawla trapped Sharma while Curran got de Kock.
A good score from Saurabh Tiwary has led the team to a total of 121-4 in the 14 over. With Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard, it was all set for a final flurry of runs but that didn’t happen.
Good comeback bowling from bowlers have restricted MI to 162-9. Losing regular wickets caused the damage and no one really stick to the wicket and scored cheaply before closing the innings.
Chawla and Curran were the economical bowlers picking up one wicket each while Lungi Ngidi, although expensive but picked up three wickets in the end. Deepak Chahar and Ravindra Jadeja also went for plenty of runs but took a couple of wickets each.
Chasing 162, Chennai got a nightmare start. They lost Shane Watson and Murali Vijay in the first two overs falling to, also new recruits for Mumbai, Trent Boult and James Pattinson and the score was 6-2 after two overs.
With much of the game swung in Mumbai’s favor, by Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu started the rebuilding work. Rayudu was the aggressor and du Plessis was doing the support work. The pair added 115 runs in 14 overs when Rayudu departed after scoring 71 off 48 runs. CSK needed 42 runs in the last 4 overs.
Expecting MS Dhoni to come to the crease but Dhoni does what Dhoni does. Ravindra Jadeja was the next in. His coming saw a couple of boundaries before his departure when he got out LBW to Krunal Pandya on the first ball of the 17th over. 29 runs required off 17 balls, again, expecting Dhoni on the crease but Dhoni does what Dhoni does. Next batsmen in, Sam Curran. Left-hander vs left-hander.
The gamble did pay off. Curran smashed Pandya for a six and a four. 16 runs from 12 balls needed. Penultimate over, who would you throw the ball to. Jasprit Bumrah. But Curran also smashed Bumrah for a first-ball six before he was bowled on the next ball.
All this time, du Plessis was calmly scoring runs and knowing the pitch, saving for the last overs. The next ball, he cleared extra-cover with ease leaving just 5 runs in the final over. But, a little too late and too less for Trent Boult to save the day for MI. du Plessis hit consecutive boundaries to seal the deal for CSK. Chennai is on board with two points.
Since 2013, MI has lost their first match in each season and this season started in the same fashion for them. Although Rohit Sharma has lifted the trophy on four occasions but it is a record that they will be not very proud of.
After the match Sam Curran, the hero with the bat and ball, said, “I was actually really excited when I was coming to Chennai. Haven’t met a lot of guys, haven’t had much to think, landed two days ago and straight out there. To be honest, very surprised I went in but he’s a genius, he obviously thought something. I think so, that was the over we wanted to target – a six or out approach.”
Ambati Rayudu was given the man of the match for his brilliant innings. Another season of IPL started and another strong start by CSK and another defeat start by MI.
Man of the Match: Ambati Rayudu
Result: Chennai Super Kings won by 5 wickets
Points: Chennai Super Kings 2, Mumbai Indians 0
