Punjab Kings Look at Pace for IPL 2021

Where they finished in 2020

The Kings XI Punjab, now named the Punjab Kings, finished sixth in the season after a brilliant comeback towards the business end.

They ended on twelve points but were struggling at last before a brilliant run lifted their season.

Batting

Punjab Kings skipper, and previous seasons orange cap winner, KL Rahul will be hoping to build on his recent run of form, while also erasing strike-rate concerns.

In IPL 2020, the Punjab Kings had a lot of firepower with the bat.

The top-order was as strong as ever with Rahul and Agarwal, while Nicholas Pooran came in at four.

Punjab also found a new position for the Universe Boss at number three.

They used Chris Gayle at number three, and the move turned out to be a masterstroke.

With Gayle at three, the side had more experience in the middle overs and could attack the spinners well.

The management decided to release Maxwell and Neesham after the two had a poor outing in 2020.

In their place, Punjab Kings bought Fabien Allen and Moises Henriques to help boost the middle-order.

The middle-order has been the one region of concern for Punjab Kings , and they will hope the two overseas players can help change their fortunes.

Punjab has also managed to buy the number T20I batsman Dawid Malan for a bargain price, which further provides middle-order options.

Along with the overseas contingent, Punjab has Deepak Hooda, who found form towards the end of IPL 2020, and Sarfaraz Ahmed, who is yet to live up to his potential.

Bowling

One of the key factors behind Punjab’s struggles in IPL 2020 was bowling.

They had a few talented bowlers like Mohammad Shami, Murugan Ashwin, and Ravi Bishnoi.

Both were consistent towards the end, while talents like Arshdeep Singh came out and helped in the death.

They also have Chris Jordan, who did a good job, but the bowling still couldn’t do well at the death.

This season they spent a huge sum of their purse on fast bowlers such as Riley Meredith and Jhye Richardson.

With the acquisition of the two pacers, the bowling may look a touch better.

The spin attack is likely to comprise Murugan Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi again.

The two leg-spinners were brilliant last season, and more brilliance can be expected with the tournament coming back to India.

Youngsters to Watch out for:

Ishan Porel:

Known for his pace and potential, Ishan Porel will be hoping for some more game time this season after a lot of benchtime in 2020.

Despite the bowlers’ performance in the first half of IPL 2020, Ishan Porel didn’t get an opportunity in the XI.

The 22-year-old is considered a very talented bowler, and a chance could be on its way this season.

Riley Meredith:

Punjab Kings
Australian speedster, Riley Meredith, has enjoyed a brilliant season and is now hot property with his high pace.

The 24-year-old fast bowler was hot property in the auctions.

After a strong Big Bash League, Riley Meredith’s name came up, and his speed has attracted many franchises.

Riley Meredith may have a central role in the line-up with the Punjab Kings looking to bring in new pacers into their side.
