Dasun Shanaka, the Dambulla Viiking captain handed Kandy Tuskers second straight defeat in a rain-hit game. In a closely contested game, Tuskers were four runs short as they miss out to win the game narrowly. The DLS method worked in the favor of Viiking as they opened their LPL account with a win. Chasing a steep target of 196 runs, the rain arrived in the 10th over at a point where Viiking were four runs ahead and that was enough for them to win the match.
In the 3rd match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League, Dambulla Viiking were taking on Kandy Tuskers. Tuskers lost their opening match against Colombo Kings while Viiking are making their debut in the event. Dasun Shanaka led Viiking beat Kusal Perera led Tuskers. The rain had its say in the end and favoring Viiking winning by four runs.
Dambulla Viiking innings – Shanaka-Patel affair
Losing the toss, Dambulla Viiking were sent in to bat first. Niroshan Dickwella and Oshada Fernando were the openers and they started pretty well. In an attempt to convert single into double, Fernando slipped and injured himself to the extent that he had to leave the crease being retired hurt on 10 runs.
Upul Tharanga the next man in. There was no further damage till the 7th over when Dickwella went for his pre-meditated reverse-sweep and can only loop the ball to the point. The pressure of slow scoring also got on Tharanga as he managed to find long on in the 9th over.
Then combined Dasun Shanaka and Samit Patel. And the pair added on 127 runs in just 64 balls to bring up a daunting total of 195 runs. Shanaka was the aggressive of the two. He scored 73 runs of just 37 balls with 8 fours and 4 maximums. Patel scored 58 runs off 38 balls that included five fours and two sixes.
Both batsmen were out in the final over and a target of 196 runs was set. At one stage 150 was looking difficult for them but they reached 195 courtesy Shanaka and Patel.
Asela Gunaratne was the best bowler picking up two wickets for just 20 runs in his three overs. Naveen ul Haq picked up the wickets of Shanaka and Patel in the final over.
Kandy Tuskers innings – Rain has its final say
Rahmanulllah Gurbaz started the innings where he left in the previous game. Kusal Perera punches the first ball crisply for a boundary. The second ball, he absolutely nailed the pull shot but straight to deep-wicket who barely had to move. Oh captain, what have you done?
Gurbaz along with Kusal Mendis were going on nicely. Hitting boundaries and maximums. But a first ball slow yorker from Malinda Pushpakumara had Gurbaz bowled. He departed on 30 runs off 18 balls.
After the powerplay, Kandy Tuskers had reached 61-2.
Tuskers were going on nicely before Kamindu Mendis was out in 9th over. And the next over, it started to rain heavily. With Kusal Mendis batting so nicely, Tuskers had the upper-edge in the game. At the time of arrival of the rain, Viiking were four runs ahead of Tuskers and that proved to be enough to win them their first game of LPL.
No further play was possible and Tuskers lost their second-straight game in a heart-breaking manner as they lost the tournament opener in the super over.
Anwar Ali, Pushpakumar, and Lahiru Madushanka picked up one wicket each.
Dasun Shanka, for his 73 runs off just 37 balls that included eight 4s and four 6s, was the man of the match in the rain-hit game.
