South Africa vs England Prediction – 1st ODI Match

South Africa vs England 1st ODI Match Prediction

World champions England return to ODI cricket for the first time since their World Cup triumph last year, against the team whom they beat to kick-start what proved to be a successful tournament on home soil, South Africa. The first match of this three-game ODI series takes place at Newlands, Cape Town, on February 4 and the live action starts at 13:00 local time.

England beat South Africa in their first match of the World Cup and went on to lift the trophy but the ODI squad for this leg of the tour is a mixed one – Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Mark Wood all being rested and Jofra Archer missing out injured.

South Africa sit fourth in the world rankings, meanwhile, and will be keen to bounce back from their test defeat. They too have a mixed squad – some of the players who finished seventh at the World Cup are retained, but new captain Quinton de Kock leads a team which also features several new faces.

Toss Prediction

England won the toss in all four test matches so it is surely South Africa’s turn this time and it may be a match to set a target and bowl second.

Weather Report

A cloudy, humid day in Cape Town awaits – there is likely to be no rain but the dew will be a factor to consider in the second innings.

Pitch Condition

Newlands turns more than any other South African wicket, but it is still a pitch on which good batting will be rewarded.

South Africa

Quinton de Kock who has taken over the captaincy of the side from Faf du Plessis has his task cut out. The side is going through one of its worst phases and he has to steer it out of this at the moment. The skipper would have to restore the pride and confidence in his team after the disastrous performance the side put up during the Test series. They look short in terms of confidence at the moment and are up against a team that is in good form. The South Africans have to use their home advantage to good effect going into this game.

The side will need a good start at the top from Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks. This has been one of the sore points for the side for a while and the openers need to lay a strong platform going into this game. Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller and Janneman Malan have to do well in the middle overs for the side in this game. JJ Smuts and Andile Phehlukwayo down the order will hope to finish the innings in style going into the game. Lungi Ngidi must pick up wickets with the new ball in company of Phehlukwayo. It will be interesting to see how Beuran Hendricks, Tabraiz Shamsi and Lutho Sipamla bowl against the strong batting line-up that England has.

Eoin Morgan would be excited leading the side in the ODI leg of the series after the team had demolished the hosts in the Test series. This is likely to give them psychological edge as they go into this game. Having already got the upper hand in the series the team would look to continue with their dominance over the South African side that doesn’t look in the best of form at the moment. The World Champions pack a very good team with a long batting line-up. Morgan would want his side to play to its potential and aim for taking a lead in the series in the 1st game.

The side has a very powerful batting line-up with Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow at the top and the pair has regularly provided the side with a good start. The middle order is also very strong for the side with Morgan, Moeen Ali and Dawid Malan in the side. Down the order Adil Rashid and Sam Curran add forte to this batting line-up with their hitting abilities. Their bowling attack looks good going into the game. Chris Jordan and Matthew Parkinson will be looking to provide the side with a good start with the new ball and expect good support from Curran. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are the two bowlers likely to trouble the South African batsmen most during the game.

Cricket betting sites in India are already counting the England team as favorites in this game and this isn’t surprising given their recent record in this format of the game. The South Africans who are going through a tough phase will have to play out of their skins to defeat the strong English side. It will be interesting to see if the hosts are able to come up with a positive approach in this game.

England has a very strong batting line-up and this will make them favorites as they go into this game.
