Who will win Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades, BBL 2020?
Sydney Thunder will look to continue their return to winning ways when they face winless Melbourne Renegades at Canberra’s Manuka Oval. The match takes place on January 15 and gets underway at 18:10 local time.
Sydney Thunder ended a run of three consecutive defeats when they beat Hobart Hurricanes last time out – Alex Hales’ half-century leading a chase of 163 to beat them with two balls to spare. They now have a big chance to make it back-to-back wins when they take on a Renegades team they have beaten once already this season.
SYT vs MLR Toss Prediction
It is four matches since Melbourne Renegades won the bat flip so they are due a change in fortune. The Thunder elected to field first when they were last in Canberra.
SYT vs MLR Weather Report
Smog was an issue last time the Big Bash rolled into Canberra, while there will be cloud cover for this game and a very small chance of rain too. Otherwise, the smoke – caused by the bushfires – has eased a little in the past day.
SYT vs MLR Pitch Condition
Canberra’s Manuka Oval is a balanced wicket, though its true nature could not be explored last time out as heavy smog caused the early abandonment of the Thunder’s last match here.
Sydney Thunder has 4 wins in 9 matches and is just one spot behind Adelaide Strikers at number 5 in the points table. A win here would put Thunder back on track in the race to play-offs. SYT defeated Hobart Hurricanes in the last match after facing 3 consecutive losses. Of these 3, Thunder lost to Melbourne Stars twice. However, Sydney Thunder improved their batting performance in the last match chasing 163 against Hobart.
Previously, Sydney Thunder finished with 145-5 batting first against Melbourne Stars. The strike rates of their top-order batsmen Khawaja and Callum Ferguson are a concern. While Alex Hales is a good hitter in this format of the game, Khawaja and Ferguson need to step up and score at better rates. Hales was top team batsman in the last match scoring 55 off 36 and along with Khawaja he built a 96-runs opening partnership.
Alex Ross looked in good touch at number 4 while Matthew Gilkes has previously come to the rescue when the top order collapsed. Daniel Sams and Chris Morris are also back in form and would the bowlers to watch out for.
Renegades are still waiting for their 1st win of BBL 2019-20. In the last match at an away venue, Renegades lost to Adelaide Strikers chasing 173 runs. Prior to that loss, MLR had scored 168 and 175 batting first against MLS and Perth Scorchers. However, following 2 consistent batting performances, Renegades were all-out for 110 against ADS.
While Shaun Marsh, Marcus Harris, and Sam Harper failed to lay the foundation for the chase, Beau Webster became team top batsman with 49 off 33 balls. Mohammad Nabi failed to make an impression with either of his skills. Going into this match against Sydney Thunder, MLR would back its top-order to score heavily and give the team a fighting chance for a maiden win this season.
While Samit Patel has been economical with the ball, he’s not finding many wickets to build pressure on the opposition. Another such bowler with limited wickets and a good economy is Cameron Boyce. MLR needs Nabi to pick wickets in quick succession or work his magic with the bat in the death overs.

Sydney Thunder is coming on the back of a win and they’ve got a lot to play for. Defeating Renegades in the match take their points tally to 11 in 10 matches and place the team comfortably at number 3. Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja are in form at the top while the two lead bowlers, Daniel Sams and Chris Morris found their rhythm recently. Melbourne Renegades batting form has dipped and they are dependent on a few good batsmen. The bowling attack hasn’t been up to the mark and they look weaker than a few matches ago.
